What is Fortilink?

I came across this term 'FortiLink' and 'FortiLink mode' for low/medium/high-end FGT models. But I have no idea what it is, how does it work?

FortiLink is a CAPWAP-based way to connect FortiSwitches to a FortiGate. It allows a FortiGate to be 'extended' with switch ports much the same way FortiAP extends a FortiGate with wireless interfaces and FortiExtender extends a FortiGate with 3G/4G connections. This is accomplished through the "Switch Controller" feature, which uses modified CAPWAP and FortiLink Protocols that allows a FortiGate to:

  • Provision VLANs and assign them to port(s)
  • Access methods (802.1x, captive portal)
  • View port status from a "Fortilink'ed" FortiSwitch

See here for model-specific details.
