How does DNS filtering work?

Does DNS filter only protect traffic through the FortiGate?

Or

Does it only protect lookups performed against the FortiGate?

Depend on configuration, it could be both; DNS filter profile will be applied to Firewall policies for traffic control and/or applied on the DNS database/interface on FortiGate
